Outline of Subject: This BTEC Level 1 / 2 First Award in Travel and Tourism is equivalent to one GCSE and is aimed at inspiring and enthusing students to consider a career in the travel and tourism sector. The course includes four units:

Unit 1: The UK Travel and Tourism Sector. This unit covers the main types of tourism in the UK, the contribution that travel and tourism make the UK economy and the different components industries that make up the travel and tourism sector. This unit is assessed externally through a 50 minute exam.

Unit 2: UK Travel and Tourism Destinations. This unit covers what the different types of UK destinations have to offer, as well as locating tourist UK destinations and routes. This unit is assessed internally through assignment.

Unit 4: International Travel and Tourism Destinations which looks at international travel and tourism destinations and gateways and reasons for their appeal to different visitors.

Unit 5: Factors Affecting Worldwide Travel and Tourism covers the influential factors on tourism and why events such as natural disasters can have a significant impact on the sector.

How will I learn? You will study three mandatory units, covering the fundamental knowledge, skills and understanding required for Travel and Tourism. You will then build on the knowledge gained in the mandatory units by choosing one out of six further optional units.

Where will it take me? Through achieving a BTEC level 1/2 you will have a multitude of career pathways in which you may take: Hotelier; Chef; Tourist Information Manager; Hotel Receptionist; Publican; Travel Agent; Holiday Representative; Restaurant Manager; Coach Driver; Cruise Ship Worker; Aeroplane Cabin Crew.
